Bodhi Day is a Buddhist celebration that commemorates the day Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha, achieved enlightenment sitting under a bodhi tree. Bodhi Day is a big deal in Asia, and it’s also observed by Buddhist communities worldwide.
Traditions around this enlightened day include mindful meditation and decorating a bodhi tree, not dissimilar to what other cultures do to Christmas trees, symbolizing the tree under which Buddha reached Nirvana. Sweet sticky rice made with coconut milk is a popular dish on Bodhi Day, and so are cookies shaped like trees! We can all learn about this beautiful holiday, so try meditating once in a while!
